Entry 340 - Last Session in Maui for 2016

Last session in Maui and I was rewarded with multiple rights, steep lefts, long rides, and lots of fun! Just wish I didn't have to go back to Southern California. But, then again, there are worse places to live!

Entry 339 - More Time

No Pic Today

I always wish I had more time in Maui to surf. Just want to surf every day if it was possible. Fun session today even though it was bumpy and small.

Entry 337 - Hurricane on the Way

Surf session third day in a row. A little less bumpy than the 1st session and a lot more size. Caught a few rights today but nothing much else to say besides "I'm in Maui surfing!"

Entry 336 - Dawn Patrol in Maui

I figured out years ago that it's best to rent a board around 10AM and keep it for 24hrs. That way you can get 2 session in for the price of one. That's exactly what I did too. Woke up early this morning and headed out for dawn patrol. It was a lot more glassy than yesterday and the sets were a little bigger as well. There's a hurricane on the way too - might have a lot to do with that.

Entry 335 - 1st Session in Maui

Well, first session in Maui at the Breakwater and it was everything I expected it always has been - warm water, consistent sets, and beautiful scenery. Pretty much all lefts - 90% of the time. No rights for me today. Started using Glassy Pro too since SurfExplorer is just too inconsistent.

Entry 258 - Last 2015 Maui Surf Session

My last surf session in Maui for 2015 and it turned out to be nice and quiet. Got in for dawn patrol before the schools started showing up and although there were only about 6 or 7 good sets in the hour I was out there, I had a great time. Most memorable ride was a nice waist high set that took me close to the rocks of the jetty. Next post will be of my surf experience in Waikiki!

Entry 257 - In Search of a Board

Another beautiful day in paradise! Boss Frog's was out of boards so I had to go searching - wanted a performance board this time that was a little lighter. Found what I needed at Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy and was pleased. Surf schools were out in force in the harbor so traffic was pretty heavy and I had to keep my eye on everyone. No major injuries besides my annual reef scratches though and I caught a few nice ones in the warm water!

Entry 256 - Muggy in LA

Heard on the news and from the Facebook feeds that LA has been muggy all weekend and that A/C is a must today. Glad I'm in Hawaii! Lahaina Harbor again today before I take the board bag to Boss Frog's. Better sets than yesterday but the teachers were out in force. Lots of dodging going on and had to pay attention... felt like Porto on a Saturday morning! Gotta remember to watch the dismount here. Almost got a face full of coral once or twice. Yikes!

Entry 255 - Lahaina Return

Back in Maui! Annual summer vacation in Hawaii and got out to catch some swell today in Lahaina. Same old knee to waist high weak stuff but still fun. Yes, I could have gone to the east side (e.g., Ho'okipa) but it's a long drive and I'm on vacation. I'll settle for the small stuff and being among the folks getting lessons. It's always fun to see the little kids stand up on their first wave. Wife got out too and enjoyed herself. All around a beautiful day with the family with post-session at the Surfing Goat Dairy as we usually do.

Entry 162 - Another Day in Paradise

Yep, another day in paradise and not looking forward to going back to LA on Saturday. Got in this one last surf session and I'm apparently just missing a new swell that is going to be building starting over the weekend. Got my fair share of lefts today dodging the surf schools. Next time we're out in Maui I've got to find a nice right. Maybe further down toward Oluwalu. I can't complain though, any day in Maui surfing is a good day!

Entry 161 - Sore Shoulder

My right shoulder was sore today and I think it was from the GoPro wrist mount. Just not used to it. A lot sunnier today and more mushy surf due to the lower tide. Still fun though and saw the same folks in the lineup as I did yesterday - including the surf instructors and battalion of students learning to ride their first waves. I still remember that. Whenever I see one of them pop-up and catch something for the first time I know they're hooked. Only a few more days left on the island and I'll miss it until September!

Entry 160 - No Big Island

Went to the Big Island this year in Hawaii for the first 5 days of our vacation but got no surfing in due to the bad weather and choppy seas. Maui was a better story though after the tropical depression moved on up north of the island and made for some better conditions. One of these days I'll decide to venture out further than Lahaina Harbor but it's just so much fun and super convenient. Man, I love the water here!

Entry 061 - Lahaina Breakwater (Final Day)

Another fine day on the 9'2" but smaller and weaker lines than yesterday. Got out pretty early (7:45 AM) and caught two nice lefts. Much longer wait between sets today and they were not as punchy either. Still, the crowd was fun and the water was just beautiful. Overall, the Lahaina break was nice but I miss Porto for the wave energy and shape. Too bad I've got to wait another year before surfing Hawaii again and check out some other spots (unless I can get more vacation)!

Entry 060 - Lahaina Breakwater (Part 3)

Pick up a 9'2" this morning from Boss Frogs instead of the 8'2" I had at the beginning of the week. Much better! Also helped that the surf was up a little more as well. The board didn't have a GoPro mount so I resorted to using the wrist mount again but turned inside - also much better. The Breakwater is nice and the locals are friendly but there's a long wait between good sets. My best ride of the day was a left that I took almost all the way to the other side of the breakwall. Great day!

Entry 059 - Lahaina Breakwater (Part 2)

Woke up early this morning to catch some waves before Flossie comes through. I'm glad I did because by 10 AM the rain started and the seas turned white-capped. The 8'2" had a cheap GoPro mount on the front so I used it today instead of the wrist mount (which I think I'll return to REI - not very good). The waves were much cleaner and glassier this morning as opposed to yesterday. Locals were out in force with only a couple of tourists including myself. Caught 3 nice lefts and almost had a fourth but fell popping up. The 8'2" Boss Frog Epoxy board makes it harder to catch soft surf. After the storm blows through I'm hoping to get a 9' epoxy for later in the week. Still, I had a really fun time and the view was fantastic!

Entry 058 - Lahaina Breakwater (Part 1)

Left Kaua'i the other day for Maui and some nicer surf. Got a little better before the Tropical Storm Flossie hits tomorrow. Rode an 8'2" from Boss Frogs and caught a few nice ones. Crowd was mainly locals since the inside was pretty much flat. The 8'2" was an epoxy board much nicer than the soft top I rented in Kaua'i. Rode more like my 9' Stewart but more sporty. I wished the center fin was a little longer but I had a good session overall.
